My wife must pay me N1m before I grant her divorce, businessman tells Abuja court

Businessman Nasiru Yunusa informed a Kubwa Upper Area Court in the Federal Capital Territory that he would agree to divorce his wife, Aisha Hamisu, if she pays him one million Naira.

The couple, who married under Islamic law in 2021 and have a 13-month-old daughter, faced marital issues with Hamisu citing lack of care and respect as grounds for seeking dissolution.

She said that Yunusa packed her belongings from his house to her father’s house on April 19, 2022.

Yunusa, however, expressed his desire for Hamisu to return to their home but indicated willingness to grant a divorce if she agrees to compensate him. He claimed to have spent one million Naira on legal proceedings and supporting her, which he is prepared to verify.

In response, Hamisu stated that she did not love Yunusa and couldn’t live with him, refuting his claim of financial support and mentioning that she had been with her parents for the past two and a half years after he left her belongings at their doorstep.

“I underwent a Cesarean section at Kubwa General Hospital to deliver our daughter, and he didn’t contribute to any part of the hospital bill. I am willing to repay him the dowry of N50,000 only.” The Judge, Mr. Mohammed Wakili, postponed the case for further proceedings until January 8, 2024.
