According to Salma Anas, the President’s Special Adviser on Public Health Matters, President Bola Tinubu is expressing concern about the ‘japa syndrome’ inherited from past administrations. The term “japa syndrome” refers to the notable increase in the emigration of Nigerian citizens to foreign countries in pursuit of better opportunities.

Anas, representing Tinubu at the 2023 annual conference of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists, conveyed that her principal is determined to address the concerning ‘japa syndrome’ inherited from previous administrations.

Tinubu pledges to utilize his influence to reverse this trend, emphasizing the need to retain medical experts within the country. Anas stated, “President Bola Tinubu is troubled by the ‘japa syndrome’ from past administrations for evident reasons. Our commitment includes reversing this trend by implementing various interventions.

We aim to motivate health sector workers in Nigeria through consistent payment of salaries, allowances, and the creation of a conducive work environment. Our efforts will extend to upgrading medical facilities, particularly at the primary healthcare level.”
